World Cup 2026: Canadian Swansong Has Compelling Look

Switzerland vs Colombia

Dark horses Colombia meets Swiss precision is how FIFA has billed this last-16 tie.

That could be a very apt way of describing what is about to unfold in the final fixture on Canadian soil during this World Cup 2026.

And, with a quarter-final tie with holders Argentina or Egypt awaiting the winner, no incentive is required.

Talking Points

Belief is growing in the Switzerland camp after they followed up their Group B-topping campaign with a 2-0 win over Algeria in the last 32.

While that was expected, the emergence of 20 year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi has caught the wider eye. He is now one of the key cogs in Murat Yakin’s well-oiled machine, with the Freiburg star registering three goals and two assists so far.

Along the way, he became the youngest player to score a World Cup double as a substitute.

According to Opta, he is the first Swiss player to be directly involved in five goals at a World Cup since detailed data collection began in 1966.

At 20 years and 261 days old, he is also the youngest player to reach that tally for any nation since 1966.

While Manzambi brings excitement, captain Granit Xhaka, who earned his 150th cap against Algeria, brings experience and there is no doubt about the importance of the Sunderland midfielder to his national team.

Experience also counts for a lot for Colombia.

Like the Swiss, they have delivered World Cup 2026 highlights and are unbeaten in four matches.

Victories over Uzbekistan and DR Congo, coupled with a goalless draw against Portugal, ensured they topped Group K.

They then underlined their dark-horse credentials with a composed 1-0 victory against Ghana in the Round of 32.

Colombia are now unbeaten in 90 minutes in their past seven World Cup matches, their longest streak ever and have kept three straight clean sheets.

With just one goal conceded in total to date, Nestor Lorenzo’s men have been one of the tournament’s toughest nuts to crack, while the fearsome Luis Diaz and 2014 World Cup Golden Ball winner James Rodriguez provide the attacking magic capable of changing a game in an instant.

It’s clear their star names are Diaz and Rodriguez, two players who have the guile and knowhow to trouble any opponent.

The fact this tie offers Colombia the chance of an-all South American quarter-final and a shot at revenge after defeat in the 2024 Copa America Final will be even more of a reason why I think Los Cafeteros will prevail in Vancouver.

History

It’s nearly 20 years since these nations met – a 2007 friendly in Florida when second half goals from Jho Viafara and Andres Chitiva secured a 3-1 success for the South Americans.

Edixon Perea had given Colombia an early lead only for an Alexander Frei penalty to draw Switzerland level before the break.

All bar one of their four meetings have been friendlies, including a 2-2 draw in 1985 when Heinz Hermann and Marco Schallibaum were the Swiss scorers.

The only competitive clash came in the 1994 World Cup group stages when goals late in each half from Hermán Gaviria and Harold Lozano sealed a 2-0 win in Group A triumph.

Yet that didn’t prevent Colombia from crashing out as Switzerland, managed by future England boss Roy Hodgson, reached the knockout stages.

Overall, Colombia have two wins, there has been one Swiss success and a draw.

Betting Tip

Our SBOTOP World Cup 2026 betting odds edge towards Colombia and so do I.

I think the Swiss have had some super teams and I do recall being particularly irritated that a shocking decision cost them at Euro 2020 at the quarter-final stage.

This time, though, I don’t think they quite have the all-round quality to win through.

Colombia are priced 1X2 @ 2.31 and Asian Handicap -0.75 @ 2.69.

The Swiss are on offer in a variety of appealing ways too, including 1X2 @ 3.29 and Asian Handicap +0.25 @ 1.96 and 0.00 @ 2.42.

That latter bet caught my eye, as did 1X2 Draw @ 3.07 after 90 minutes.

A repeat of their most recent meeting, albeit nearly two decades ago, will pay out @ 22.00 with Correct Score 3-1.

For goals – and there has never been a goalless meeting between the two – how about Over 2.50 @ 2.42, Total Goal 0-1 @ 2.66, 2-3 @ 1.90 or 4-6 @ 4.19? Also catching my eye has been Half Time Full Time Draw Home @ 5.50
